AAC is the primary audio format used by iTunes, but you may find that many other MP3 players and software do not work with AAC music. Thus you will need to convert these AAC files to MP3 format with some audio converter tool. Luckily iTunes itself has the capability to convert AAC files to MP3 format. Converting these AAC files to MP3 format in iTunes is a little tricky though.
Steps to convert AAC to MP3 with iTunes
1. Open iTunes Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
2. Click the General button, then click the Importing Settings button in the second section of the window.
3. From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format to MP3 Encoder. See screenshot on the left. then click OK to save the settings.
Select one or more songs in your library, then from the Advanced menu, choose Create MP3 version; or right click the AAC music in your library, and select Create MP3 version from the pop-up menu.
A second MP3-based track of the same song will be created by iTunes. Delete the AAC track if you wish.
AAC to MP3 Conversion Additional Information
MP3 stands for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III, it is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. The advantage of using a “lossy” format is that the file sizes are much smaller. Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is a standardized, lossy compression and encoding scheme for digital audio. The disadvantage is that the sound quality may not be as good as the original, uncompressed format, especially when converting between compressed formats, for example audio conversion between MP3 and AAC.
