SWF is originally an acronym for “Shockwave Flash” since the SWF format was designed for Shockwave Player. However, SWF file has become a standard means of publishing compressed Flash on the Web. Therefore, the SWF has been modified to mean “Small Web Format” as well.
SWF files can be generated from within several Adobe products: Flash, Flash Builder (an IDE) and After Effects, etc. Except for Adobe products, there are also various third party programs that can produce files in this format, such as Multimedia Fusion 2, Captivate and Socusoft DVD to iPad Converter.
